Lotus Pond No. 3

40x30” oil, oil crayon, spray paint

I just happened to be at the Conservatory in the Bronx Botanical Gardens on a sunny day in late Summer when the Lotus Flowers were in full bloom. This painting is from my sketches and photos from that glorious day.

I have always been drawn to this voluptuous plant. The best reason to paint Lotus flowers and leaves is to differentiate between the planes. The flatness of the pond reflects the sky and the sculptural leaves are like planetary objects in space.
